Surgical Technology

This program is instructed by Melissa Pelfrey, CST.  A surgical technologist is a member of the surgical team who works with surgeons and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care before, during and after surgery.

Program Description

This program provides students with classroom instruction and clinical experience under the close supervision of the certified surgical technology instructor and hospital personnel.  The Surgical Technology program includes studies in medical terminology, communications, anatomy/physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology.  Students learn the principles of patient preparation and care, surgical procedures, operative techniques, surgical instruments and equipment, principles of asepsis, basic computers, robotics, physics and electricity.  Students spend at least half of their enrollment in an operating room under the close supervision of a surgical technology proctor.  Students participate in a variety of surgical procedures at one of several area hospitals.  Students serve as an important member of the surgical team in well over 100 surgeries before graduating.
