Industrial Maintenance Technology

This program is instructed by Martin Young. It includes classroom and practical learning experience, theory and application in the following:

Program Description:

This program prepares students with entry-level skills needed in the maintenance field.  Students are required to complete the Core Modules before progressing to other fields of study.  These two modules take about eight months to complete and the student is eligible for the Industrial Maintenance Helper Certificate.

The student must then choose at least two of the five elective modules offered to be eligible to receive the Industrial Maintenance Technician Diploma.  The student may elect to take all five elective modules which will increase his knowledge and extend his time until graduation.  Each elective module takes about four months to complete.  They include Programmable Logic Controls, Welding, Machine Tool, HVAC, and Drafting/Computer-aided Drafting.

Job Opportunities:

Industrial maintenance technicians are employed by commercial and industrial firms such as manufacturing plants, hospitals, construction and utilities having equipment that must be installed and maintained. Technicians must be able to spot minor problems and correct them before they become major ones. After diagnosing the problem, the technician disassembles the equipment and repairs or replaces the necessary parts. The final step is to test the machine to ensure it is running smoothly.

A wide range of tools may be used when performing preventive maintenance or making repairs. Although repairing machines is the most important job of industrial mechanics, they also spend most of their time performing preventive maintenance. They regularly inspect machinery and check performance. Installation of new machinery is another responsibility. As plants retool and invest in new equipment, they increasingly rely on these workers to properly situate and install the machinery. As employers increasingly seek workers who have a variety of skills, industrial technicians are taking on new responsibilities. Technicians with broad skills in machine repair should have favorable job prospects.
