Building Construction Technology

This program is instructed by Steve Lane. The BCT program provides students with basic training in areas concerned with building homes.  As trends and consumer tastes change, builders must be prepared.  This course is designed to prepare the student for this ever changing industry.  The training is based upon fundamental construction techniques with an emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability.

The course focuses on both framing and finishing carpentry including basic blueprint reading and estimating costs of construction.  Additional training options include basic masonry, electricity, and heating/air conditioning.  A student may choose to study certain options of the course rather than taking the entire program.  Credit for prior training and prior experience will be given.  The BCT program will provide detailed coverage of all aspects of light frame construction.  It will include site clearing, site layout, foundation, framing, insulating, sheathing, roofing, windows and doors, exterior finish, interior finish, and mechanical systems.  Special emphasis will be placed on safety and use of modern tools, materials, and prefabricated components.  This course will include basic information covering stair construction, remodeling, painting, and decorating.  Information about building materials includes size and grade descriptions and basic technical information that covers physical properties and other important characteristics.

Program Objectives:

  1. To develop skills, attitudes and proper working habits that will enable the student to make an intelligent entry into the building construction technology field.
  2. To provide opportunities for the student to learn the standards, codes, and regulations governing the phases of the general building construction field.
  3. To develop within the student certain ethics that will cause them to realize the importance of quality workmanship.
  4. To help the student to realize the necessity of a day's work for a day's wage.
