Definition:
   A surgical technologist is a member of the surgical team who works with surgeons, anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, registered nurses and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery.

Course Description:
   This course is instructed by Melissa Pelfrey  It provides the student with classroom instruction and clinical experience under the supervision of the certified Surgical Tech instructor and hospital personnel. Course includes medical terminology, communications, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology.
   Students gain a thorough knowledge of principles of patient preparation and care, surgical procedures, operative techniques, surgical instruments and equipment and principles of asepsis, basic computers, robotics, physics and electricity. Surgical Tech graduates have learned to apply knowledge appropriately, have received extensive clinical experience in scrubbing and circulating, and are prepared to assume the responsibilities of the profession.

Admission The Surgical Technology program is open to all adults who meet the following criteria:

* Furnish high school or GED transcript
* Pass the entrance test
* Participate in registration
* Participate in a personal interview
* Pass a physical exam within six months of enrollment date
* Take Hepatitis B shots and TB skin test
* Exhibit good emotional and physical health
* Possess desirable qualities, attitudes and the ability to profit from the instruction Surgical Tech Responsibilities

A Surgical Technologist
* Prepares operating room by selecting and opening sterile supplies and assembling, adjusting, and checking equipment
* Operates sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units, and diagnostic equipment
* Assists in preparing patients for surgery by providing physical and emotional support, checking charts, and observing vital signs
* Maintains the sterile field being vigilant that all members of the team adhere to aseptic techniques
* Anticipates the needs of the surgeons, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner
* Accounts for sponges, needles and instruments before, during and after surgery
* Prepares and applies sterile dressings following the surgical procedure

1296 Hours / 12 Months
(620 Hours Classroom / 676 Hours Clinical)

Job Opportunities:
Surgical Techs are employed in hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, cast rooms, emergency departments, ambulatory care areas, and central supply departments. They are utilized in clinics and surgicenters, in physicians and dentists offices.

Demand for:
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this field is projected to experience rapid job growth during 2000 and is ranked as the seventh fastest growing health-related field. Certification offered by Association of Surgical Technologists.
