Course Description:
This program is instructed by Brandon Kilburn. It gives the student classroom instruction and practical work experience required for entry level job performance. Masons are craftsmen who lay and bind building material such as brick, structural cinder block, glass block, and terracotta block with mortar and other substances to construct partitions, arches, sewers and other structures.
Students are taught about job safety and the use and proper care of tools.  They learn how to mix mortar and spread it as they practice the different bonds that have been used in bricklaying for centuries.  As the students' skills develop, they build more challenging projects, such as arches, chimneys, garden walls and fireplaces.  Students learn local building codes and how to read and interpret blueprints.  They will also work on exterior and interior walls, floors, patios, walks, columns, doorways, and window openings.  Working with brick, block, ceramic tile, and stone, students build projects that utilize current construction trends.  Modern masonry design frequently calls for students to handle special equipment such as welding tools, power-driven masonry saws, and corner poles, as well as the age-old tools such as a trowel, brick hammer, level, and plumb rule.

Masons work for construction firms and as independent contractors. They perform some or all of the following tasks:
* Build foundations and walls with brick, block, or stone
* Set masonry units in correct position using mortar
* Cut and shape masonry using power masonry saws, chisels and hammers
* Mix and pour concrete to form footings, foundations and floor slabs
* Finish surfaces of poured concrete using finishing tools such as floats, screeds or edgers
* Place reinforcing steel bars between walls
* Set ceramic tile on walls and floors
